Permethrin
Type: Insecticide
Mode of Action: Interferes with the sodium channels in nerve cells
Common Product Names: Tengard, Mosquito Mist, Vector Ban
What is it?
Permethrin is a synthetic chemical belonging to the pyrethroid family, designed to replicate the insecticidal activity of natural pyrethrins derived from chrysanthemum flowers. It is commonly used in both agricultural and residential settings to control a wide variety of pests, including mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, and lice. Permethrin is available in several formulations, such as liquids, powders, and sprays, making it versatile for different applications.
How does it work?
Permethrin acts on the nervous systems of insects by disrupting the normal function of nerve cells. It binds to sodium channels in the nerve cell membranes, prolonging their activation and preventing the nerves from functioning properly. This results in muscle spasms, paralysis, and ultimately the death of the insect. Permethrin is effective both upon direct contact and through ingestion by insects.
