What is it?

It can also provide early post-emergent control of certain weeds if applied during the early stages of their growth. Dithiopyr is commonly used in both residential and commercial settings due to its long residual activity, which provides extended protection against weed emergence. The compound is absorbed by the weed seeds during germination, effectively stopping their growth before they become established.

How does it work?

Dithiopyr works by interfering with the cell division process in weed seeds as they begin to germinate. When applied to soil, it creates a protective barrier that targets young seedlings as they start to grow. The herbicide disrupts microtubule formation, a critical step in cell division, thus preventing the weed from developing beyond the seedling stage. For best results, Dithiopyr should be applied before weed seeds germinate, typically in early spring. If used as a post-emergent, it is only effective on very young weeds (usually within the first one to two leaf stages). The herbicide remains active in the soil for several weeks, providing a long-lasting defense against new weed germination.
