Acetochlor

Type: Herbicide

Mode of Action: Inhibition of long-chain fatty acid synthesis

Common Product Names: Arrest & Warrant

What is it?

Acetochlor is a selective herbicide belonging to the chloroacetamide class of chemicals. Its primary area of use is in agriculture, notably in corn and soybean crops.  It is primarily used in the cultivation of corn to control a broad spectrum of annual grasses and broadleaf weeds. As a pre-emergent herbicide, it is applied before weed seeds have the chance to sprout, making it highly effective in maintaining crop health and yield.

Acetochlor is typically applied to the soil either before or shortly after planting, and it forms a protective barrier in the top layer of the soil. When weed seeds begin to germinate, the presence of Acetochlor inhibits their development, thus preventing them from reaching the surface.

How does it work?

Acetochlor works by disrupting the normal cell division and elongation processes in weed seedlings. The active ingredient does this by inhibiting the elongation of very-long-chain fatty acids in plants. This inhibition disrupts the cell membrane formation which is particularly effective during the germination phase, which is why Acetochlor is most commonly used as a pre-emergent herbicide. When applied to the soil, it is absorbed by the germinating weed seeds, and it interferes with the synthesis of key proteins and enzymes necessary for cell division. This process ultimately leads to the death of the seedling before it can emerge from the soil. The visible effects of Acetochlor on weeds are generally observed within a few weeks of application, depending on soil conditions and weather.

Benefits

  • Effective Pre-Emergent Control: Acetochlor provides reliable control of weeds before they emerge, reducing competition for nutrients, water, and sunlight in crops.
  • Broad Spectrum of Weeds: It is effective against a wide range of annual grasses and broadleaf weeds, making it versatile in various agricultural settings.
  • Residual Activity: Acetochlor has residual activity in the soil, offering extended protection against weed emergence for several weeks after application.
