24-DB
Type: Herbicide
Mode of Action: Mimics the plant hormone Auxin
Common Product Names: Butyrac 200
What is it?
2,4-DB (2,4-dichlorophenoxybutyric acid) is a selective herbicide primarily used to control broadleaf weeds in leguminous crops such as soybeans, peanuts, and alfalfa. It is a derivative of the more well-known herbicide 2,4-D, with the addition of a butyric acid side chain, which makes it less volatile and more specific in its action against broadleaf weeds while being safer for certain crops. As a post-emergent herbicide, 2,4-DB is applied after the weeds have already germinated and are actively growing. This characteristic makes it an ideal choice for integrated weed management programs where broadleaf weeds have established themselves among desirable crops.
How does it work?
2,4-DB works by disrupting the normal growth processes of broadleaf weeds. Once applied, it is absorbed through the leaves and translocated throughout the plant. As a synthetic auxin, it mimics natural growth hormones, causing uncontrolled cell division and growth. This abnormal growth exhausts the plant's resources, leading to distorted, stunted growth and eventually the death of the weed. The effects of 2,4-DB on weeds are generally visible within a few days of application, with complete control often achieved within 1 to 2 weeks, depending on environmental conditions and the growth stage of the weeds.
